Introduction

The Emergency Communications System (ECS) provides limited telephone capacity for critical campus departments responsible for responding to University-wide emergencies. The system utilizes alternative network connections to maximize calling capabilities when the public telephone network is congested or disrupted.

ECS Dialing Procedures

Calling Another UW Extension

  1. Dial 5-digit extension.
Calling A Local Seattle, Everett, Tacoma, or Olympia Number
  1. Dial 9 + 10-digit number.
Calling A Toll-Free Number
  1. Dial 9 + 1 + 800 (or 888) + 7-digit number.
Calling A Long Distance Number Using UWATS
  1. Dial [7][7].
  2. Listen for dial tone.
  3. Dial area code + 7-digit number.
  4. Listen for progress tone.
  5. Dial authorization code.
Calling A Long Distance Number Using A Personal Calling Card
  1. Dial 9 + 0 + area code + 7-digit number.
  2. After tone, dial calling card number
Reaching An ECS Extension Directly From An Outside Phone
  1. Dial 10-digit number.

ECS Phone Features

Call Forwarding All Calls

To temporarily redirect all calls to an extension or outside number.

  1. Press [*][7][2].
  2. Listen for dial tone.
  3. Dial 5-digit extension, or 9 + 10-digit number

To cancel

  1. Press [*][7][3].
Call Park

To park an incoming call at your extension (for retrieval at any extension).

  1. Press [TAP], or [Recall].
  2. Press [*][5][3].
  3. Hang up.

To return to a parked call from any other phone

  1. Press [*][5][4].
  2. Listen for dial tone.
  3. Dial extension number where call is parked.
Call Pickup

To answer a call ringing at another extension

  1. Press [*][5][5] to connect to ringing call.
Call Transfer

To transfer a call to another extension or outside number

  1. Press [TAP], or [Recall].
  2. Dial number to which call should be transferred.
  3. Hang up to transfer,

    or, if line is busy

    Press [TAP] or [Recall] twice to return to caller.

Call Conference

To add another party to your existing call

  1. Press [TAP] or [Recall].
  2. Dial number of party you wish to add.
  3. Press [TAP] or [Recall].
Call Waiting

If you hear a beep while talking on the phone, a second call is waiting.

To answer a waiting call, or to alternate between calls

  1. Press [TAP] or [Recall].
  2. Press [*][5][2].

To turn off Call Waiting

  1. Press [TAP] or [Recall].
  2. Press [*][7][0].
Last Number Redial

To automatically redial the last number you dialed

  1. Press [#][9].
Speed Calling

To place a call using the Speed Call feature

  1. Press [#][1].
  2. Dial speed code (0 through 9).

To store telephone numbers in speed calling code

  1. Press [*][7][5][1].
  2. Listen for dial tone.
  3. Dial speed code (0 through 9).
  4. Dial number you wish to program.
  5. Press [#].
Voice Mail

If, upon lifting the handset, you hear a series of beeps before the dial tone, you have new messages.

To retrieve messages

  1. Press [2][1][1].
  2. When prompted, enter your personal mailbox number.
  3. Follow menu prompts.
